WEST WARWICK — Icy conditions are still causing accidents several days after the snow storm, according to local police. Two accidents occurred within hours of each other yesterday, according to the West Warwick Police Department. One of those accidents was related to the condition of the roadway, police said.
The first accident, which occurred at 10:58 a.m., took place on New London Turnpike at Scenic Drive, according to Sgt. Erick Bonang of the West Warwick Police Department. The collision, between a tow truck and a car, occurred when the tow truck was trying to drive out of Scenic Drive, Bonang said. Because of the slope of the road and icy conditions, the truck collided with a Hyundai Elantra, he said. The operator of the tow truck told police he had been unable to stop on the ice. On the scene, the accident looked a lot worse than it was, Bonang said. The operator of the Elantra, a 23-year-old woman from Coventry, had a Dunkin Donuts Coolata drink in her car, which splattered red everywhere, he said. She was transported in a rescue to Kent Hospital for complaints of minor shoulder and neck pain, according to Bonang. Her car was towed, he said. Scenic Drive is a private road and the town is not responsible for its upkeep, Bonang said. The unsanded surface was a contributing factor to the accident, he said. Another accident occurred on New London Turnpike at 1:19 p.m., according to Lt. John Malloy of the West Warwick Police Department. This one was not related to weather, he said. A head-on collision occurred between a male driver and a female driver when the male operator, traveling east on the turnpike, left his lane of travel and crashed into the female operator’s vehicle, Malloy said. The female was transported from the scene in a rescue for apparent minor injuries, Malloy said, and the male was cited at the scene for leaving his lane of travel. “He had the sun at his back, so it wasn’t weather-related,” Malloy said. No names have been released from any of the accidents. |
