COVENTRY — A single-vehicle accident yesterday left a pick-up truck against a pole with the engine running, the airbags deployed and no one inside, according to the Coventry Police Department. The collision occurred on Phillips Hill Road, the police said, and the driver of the vehicle was nowhere to be found.
The police received a call yesterday afternoon reporting a vehicle into a pole on Phillips Hill Road, Lt. John MacDonald of the Coventry Police Department said. The caller told police the airbags had deployed on a vehicle with a handicapped plate, but there was no one in the vehicle. MacDonald said the police were trying to make contact with the suspected operator of the vehicle, but, as of late yesterday afternoon, had not yet been able to do so. “We have had cell phone contact with him, but have not been able to locate him to speak with him yet,” MacDonald said. He could not elaborate any further on the case, MacDonald said, because the police were still in the midst of their investigation. It appeared the operator lost control of the vehicle, slid on some ice and hit the pole, then left the scene of the accident, he said. The police seized the vehicle and will hold it in their possession until the operator comes forward, MacDonald said. For information about the incident will likely be available in the coming days, the police said. |
